For soccer fans, there is the World Cup. For fishing fans, there is the Big Rock fishing tournament that is hosted in Morehead, Carolina. The fishing days during the period is from Jun 14 - Jun 19 from 9am - 3pm except on Jun 19 which starts earlier at 8am. It has a long history of about 52 years and thousands of people every year visit this once a year event. The attraction of this event is its USD$1.6 million in prize money that is sure to make every fishing captain want to participate. Some of the blue marlin that gets fished out of the sea can be extremely heavy and weigh as much as 800+ pounds.

Though the Big Rock Blue Marlin Tournament attracts thousands of spectators to wow at the blue marlin, only a hundred plus boats or so will be participating as the entry fee is not cheap and is in the thousands of dollars. The blue marlin record previously for the tournament stands at about 831 pounds and the record belongs to  Ron Wallschlager of Kiawah Island, South Carolina. It is possible that when this tournament ends in 2010, the record may be broken by Eric Holmes and Andy Thomasson. Some of the prizes include a daily release prize of $5,200 for the 52nd fish released and $2,000 for the first billfish released.
