What is the dispersant used in the BP oil spill?

The dispersant used in the BP oil spill is call Corexit and is manufactured by Nalco. Corexit is made up of 6 biodegradable ingredients that been determined safe for use by the EPA.  Currently, it is been used by BP to break up the oil spill in the gulf. However, there has been some controversy of whether Corexit is more harmful to the environment or helpful. The Environment Protection Agency has requested BP to consider using other less toxic chemicals which has lead to controversy of whether Corexit is harmful.

Nalco has claim that the ingredients had been studied for years and is safe to use. Meanwhile, as oil continues to gush out, thousands of workers have been deployed to contain the oil spill. While BP is losing about $25million a day and may lose eventually billions when lawsuits and other costs are factored in, those companies helping to contain the spill stand to profit though it is a profit everyone wish they never had to make.
